Experimental scheme. A 10-mm-thick veto plastic scintillator (PS), which has a square hole of a size smaller than the reaction target at its center, will be placed before the trigger scintillator.

Reaction cross-sections and charge-changing cross-sections at intermediate energies have been used to determine the neutron skin thickness of neutron-rich isotopes, which is an important quantity to constrain the nuclear equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter. The high-isotopic resolution of the FAZIA detector, offers the possibility to determine a consistent data set on projectile fragmentation cross sections, reaction cross sections, charge-changing cross sections and their ratios in one single experiment. As a first step, we propose to perform a measurement to determine the 12 C+ 12 C and 12 C+proton cross sections at 30-80 MeV/nucleon, which are the benchmark systems for cross section measurements. This experiment will serve as a criterion for future cross section measurements using the FAZIA array for stable and unstable nuclei.
