Response and efficiency of Fazia telescopes irradiated with energetic proton beams at CNAO

This proposal aims at using proton beams at CNAO of energy from 70 to about 200 MeV in order to study in some detail the response and efficiency of the Fazia telescopes and in particular of the 10 cm thick CsI(Tl) scintillators when irradiated with strongly penetrating particles. The subject of this test has already been studied in previous dedicated measurements at the Bronowice Center (CCB) in Poland, using proton beams, as well. However, the investigation was not completed and some experimental difficulties related to the beam control prevented us to collect clean data and achieve fully satisfying results. Therefore, we believe that the wide range of available proton energies at CNAO, their fine tuning and the relatively large experimental room, suitable to mount our equipment, make this kind of investigation quite appealing there. Moreover, this test may represent a portal for further studies with Carbon ions, also available at CNAO. Indeed, our collaboration is evaluating a new scientific activity on fragmentation and nuclear equation studies at facilities (RAON, FRIB) where ion beam energies up to 200 MeV/u are or will be available. Thus, 1the possibility to test our detectors at the limits of their range of design is very important for future improvement and upgrading
